Owner Health: Let's Get Physical

We’re tired.

The roller coaster ride of the last few years has taken its toll on business owners. We’ve faced more hurdles, challenges and pivots in the last year than I can recall in my 30+ years of landscaping. And the result is owners who are tired, stressed, anxious, unhealthy, and exhausted. Over the next month, we’re going to address the topic of owner health. If you as the owner aren’t healthy, it’s far more difficult for the business to be healthy. We’ll be talking about physical health, mental health and emotional health, as well as decision fatigue. So as we finish off 2023 and look ahead to 2024, let’s make this the year we determine to get healthy and stay healthy!

Let’s start with physical health. When it comes to making positive changes in our lives, our physical health can often be the easiest area to address and in which to make changes. The benefits of getting and staying physically healthy are not new to any of us. We...

These are a Few of My Favourite Podcasts

The popularity of podcasts is increasing[1]. Not only are more people listening to podcasts, but they’re listening to more podcasts. The beauty of podcasts is their accessibility. They’re free, they’re available through many different apps and programs, and you can listen anywhere at any time. I enjoy listening to podcasts while I’m driving or walking the dog. Marla and I listen together when we’re on road trips.

Most podcasts put out new content on a regular basis, usually weekly or monthly. And I usually anticipate the release of a new podcast. I love hearing interviews with successful business owners who are willing to share their struggles and victories. These are real life stories of well-known people and businesses. I find I am encouraged to persevere and always take away some new knowledge or best practice suggestion. The podcasts provide links and additional content regarding the topic being discussed in the show notes.  With so many...

Book of the Month: Free to Focus

"The most productive business leaders I coach recognize productivity is not about getting more things done; it's about getting the right things done. It's about starting each day with clarity and ending with a sense of satisfaction, accomplishment, and energy to spare. It's about achieving more by doing less, and this book shows you how." (Michael Hyatt, Free to Focus)

This book is a productivity game-changer. Michael Hyatt guides you through the process and provides tools to identify the work that is the most productive and most satisfying. The work that allows you to achieve more by doing less. He says that , "the important question is not, Can I do this job faster, easier, and cheaper? It's, Should I be doing this job at all?"

"If you want to master your schedule, increase your efficiency and output, and create more margin in your life for the things you care about, you've got to learn how to focus. I'm talking about the ability to zero in and do the deep work that creates a...

Book of the Month: Crucial Conversations

“Crucial Conversations draws our attention to those defining moments that literally shape our lives, our relationships, and our world. . . . This book deserves to take its place as one of the key thought leadership contributions of our time.” (From the forward by Steven R. Covey)

Crucial conversations are those we have with important people in our lives, both personal and professional, where the outcome of the conversation will have a significant impact on our lives. This book teaches you how to manage and use these conversations to their full potential in order to build a better life.

No one likes difficult conversations. But they are necessary and they're important for the health of our business, our relationships and our mental wellbeing. Using the tools outlined in the book, you'll be equipped to handle these conversations with confidence, care, and clarity, making it safe to talk about almost anything and be persuasive, not abrasive.

Crucial conversations...

Book of the month: Atomic Habits

Atomic Habits has been recommended to me a number of times so it got moved up to the top of my reading list and it did not disappoint!

In some ways, it’s just really practical. Habits take time. The more often you do something, the more it becomes a habit - whether good or bad.

What makes this book stand out in my opinion is how James Clear says we are to achieve the habits we want. It’s not about motivation, it’s about systems. Small actions over time equal big results.

My 3 biggest takeaways are:

  • It’s practical. The framework for creating good habits professionally and personally is easy to understand.
  • In order to lead your team well, you need to have good habits. An owner cannot expect his/ her team to have good habits if they don’t model that behaviour themselves.
  • It’s self explanatory. Following the methods of the book will allow you more bandwidth for greater productivity in your life and business.

Right now is the perfect time of...

Book of the month: Living Forward

Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want by Michael Hyatt & Daniel Harkavy, is a book about living on purpose. It’s about making a plan for what you want your life to look like instead of drifting through life in reaction mode.

The average person spends 5 hours researching and shopping for a new car. The average bride-to-be spends 40 days planning a three-hour wedding. However, the average person never spends 1 day planning his or her life.”

Growth and development as a business owner is crucial because success doesn’t just happen. It takes time, goals, direction and a plan to get there.

My thoughts on Living Forward:

  1. It’s a step by step guide to building a life plan for your personal and business life instead of drifting through your life.
  2. A great read to compete on a vacation or a couple of day sabbatical where you have time to read and reflect on who you are and where you want to go with purpose.
  3. To achieve...

Chick-fil-A & Landscaping?

We’re focusing on sales this month and we want to provide you with tangible tips and tricks to help you be more successful. We’ve chosen Covert Cows & Chick-fil-A as the book of the month because we believe there are many practical things you can learn from the pages written by Steve Robinson.

Since the day they opened in 1946, Chick-fil-A has been closed Sundays to give staff a day with their families. Even when statistics indicated that Sunday was the busiest day in the fast food industry, they held to their conviction and remained very profitable.

Their company culture is also something to note. The way franchise owners are treated, the care that is taken to properly train staff, their creative marketing and even how they chose to keep their menu small and focused strictly on chicken are all things that I found both interesting and inspiring.

We may not be in the fast food industry but I believe there is so much we can learn from them as business owners.
